Product Stewardship Australia (PSA) is well advanced in creating a national TV recycling program. PSA aims to have a national TV take-back service up and running in 2011.
In an alliance with the Australian Information Industry Association, PSA is working with the Federal Environment Department to create a permanent collection, recycling and community education scheme that will cover end-of-life TVs and IT equipment. A joint industry-Government Implementation Working Group (IWG) is currently developing targets for collection and recycling, environmental standards, community education plans and public reporting requirements. For more information about the IWG, visit the Australian Government's eWaste web portal. Industry is also providing input to the development of Federal legislation and eWaste regulations that will provide the necessary policy framework to ensure maximium environmental benefit and minimal competitive disadvantage.
It is an exciting and positive year for PSA as we move closer towards providing a community recycling service for end-of-life TVs. A key part of the process is to identify potential partnerships for the collection of old TVs, so we are eager to hear from retailers, service and repair businesses, local councils, regional groups, and the waste management industry. Subject to the Australian Government finalising the National Product Stewardship legislation and the eWaste-specific regulations, PSA plans to commence collection in 2011.
